چکیده

The ALICE experiment is dedicated to the study of the quark gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN LHC. The Muon Forward Tracker (MFT) is under consideration by the ALICE experiment to be part of its program of detectors upgrade to be installed during the LHC Long Shutdown 2 (LS2) planned for 2018. Designed as a silicon pixel detector added in the Muon Spectrometer acceptance (−4.0 < η < −2.5) upstream of the hadron absorber, the MFT will allow a drastic improvement of the measurements that are presently done with the Muon Spectrometer and, in addition, will give access to new measurements that are not possible with the present Muon Spectrometer setup. Motivations and preliminary results are discussed here, concerning the measurement of prompt and displaced charmonia, open heavy flavors, and low mass dimuons in central Pb–Pb collisions at √ sNN = 5.5 TeV.

Scintillation Counters for the DØ Muon Upgrade

We present the results of an upgrade to the DØ muon system. Scintillating counters have been added to the existing central DØ muon system to provide rejection for cosmic ray muons and out-of-time background, and to provide additional fast timing information for muons in an upgraded Tevatron. Performance and results from the 1994–1996 Tevatron run are presented. Submitted to Nuclear Instruments ...

The PHENIX Muon Trigger Upgrade

The PHENIX muon trigger upgrade adds Level-1 trigger detectors to existing forward muon spectrometers and will enhance the ability of the experiment to pursue a rich program of spin physics in polarized proton collisions at √ s = 500 GeV . The additional muon trigger detectors and Level-1 trigger electronics will allow the experiment to select high momentum muons from the decay of W -bosons and...

Small-x Physics with the ALICE experiment at the CERN-LHC

High energy p-p, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN-LHC offer unprecedented opportunities for studying wide variety of physics at small Bjorken-x. Here we discuss capabilities of the ALICE experiment at the CERN-LHC for probing small-x QCD physics. A new forward electromagnetic calorimeter is being proposed as an ALICE upgrade to explore the small-x region in more detail.

Studies on the upgrade of the muon system in the forward region of the CMS experiment at LHC with GEMs

The LHC data-taking will resume in 2015 with energy of 13–14 TeV and luminosity of 2÷ 5× 1034 cm−2 s−1. At those energies, a considerable fraction of the particles produced propagate in the high pseudo-rapidity regions. The proposal for the upgrade of the CMS muon forward system involves Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) chambers to be installed during the second LHC Long Shutdown (LS2) covering th...

Physics Motivations for Future Cern Accelerators *

We summarize the physics motivations for future accelerators at CERN. We argue that (a) a luminosity upgrade for the LHC could provide good physics return for a relatively modest capital investment, (b) CLIC would provide excellent long-term perspectives within many speculative scenarios for physics beyond the Standard Model, (c) a Very Large Hadron Collider could provide the first opportunity ...
